I make sculptures, paintings, and written works that are grounded in the speculative and metaphysical and that catalyze healing and transformation. I aim to empower others to take charge of their own evolution, rather than pose as an “expert” for people to depend upon.
My assemblage-based power objects are imbued with both my healing intent and the meditative energy expended as I create the work. Each object is also attuned to the combined energies and symbolic meanings of my materials, which include vintage found objects, ceramics, text, and paper cut-outs of abstracted words, as well as organic and natural materials, such as crystals, driftwood, cactus wood, barnacle clusters, moss, and shed snakeskin. I treat these materials as ingredients that contribute to the purpose and power of each piece. For instance, I use barnacles, which attach to objects or other lifeforms for the duration of their lives, like a glue that enhances one’s ability to adhere to intended changes, while I use quartz as an amplifier.
My written works draw a conceptual link to my sculptures. I’ve exhibited selected personal journal entries to expose my vulnerabilities and moments of realization, to share synchronicities (meaningful coincidences), dreams and other mystical experiences, as well as my interpretations of them. Additionally, titles are critical to my work. As texts, they outline the purpose and instructions for the Power Objects’ use and/or previous uses as cultural artifacts.
Ultimately, I want my work to inspire me and others to shed limited, status-quo thinking so we may shift into radical self-acceptance, acceptance of others’ differences and, most of all, freedom.
